Leakage Reduction Applications

Leakage from any Water distribution pipe network can be significantly reduced by using the following techniques:-

By setting up DMA's (District Metering Areas) and regularly monitoring net flow "in and out" of each DMA, your "minimum flow rate at low demand times" (typically lowest flow is at night, hence known as "Minimum Night Line Flow"). Such data can be automatically downloaded from Radcom loggers via integral telemetry links. This daily updated knowledge will enable you to aim specific maintenance teams at the biggest leakage sites first, and hence reduce the overall expensive leakage costs by shortening any delays before your leaks are repaired.

Fast sampling (at up to 1 second sample rate) can be set-up on most Radcom data loggers, to support Step Testing actions. Step Testing is where valves in a local area are systematic closed whilst recording the associated flow. The damaged (ie leaking) pipe is identified when the valve feeding that leak is closed. This work is generally undertaken at night, when consumers are less likely to suffer a water stoppage, and when less flow is passing through the pipe work.

When no District Metering Areas are available, it is possible to use Radcom's Multipoint correlation equipment "SoundSens" to sweep through any pipe network to find leaks and accurately pin-point the exact position of any number of leaks during a one visit strategy. 400% time savings have been reported from many users adopting this innovative technique.

Leakage from any distribution pipe network can be significantly reduced if the pressure in the pipe is reduced. By using Radcom's time based PRV controllers the leakage losses at night can be dramatically lowered, whilst returning to a higher controlled pressure during the day. Flow override facilities are incorporated as standard to ensure that High pressure is also returned in the event of a high flow demand, such as when a Fire Hydrant is opened at night. Flow Modulation controllers are also available to provide leakage savings throughout the day and night (eg Pegasus).
